Exciting Visit!!

I am SO excited! I may get to see my sissy soon!

So, there’s the backstory…

My sister has been living in Japan since this time last year.  When her husband got orders to move to Okinawa, Japan, it was really bittersweet.  On one hand, I was happy for her.  She (like me) had never really left the country before.  It would be an amazing experience, for her and for her kids, to spend 3 years in a totally new place.  I have always thought that this world is just too big a place to live in the exact same area for an entire lifetime, and so I’ve always been sort of envious that she gets to move from place to place.  It seems like such an adventure, and it seems to really bond her to her hubby and kiddos.  I knew that Japan would just be another chapter of that adventure.

HOWEVER.  The selfish side of me was horrified that my big sissy was going to be on the other side of the world!  Japan is 14 hours ahead of us.  That means that when I’m on my lunch break, it’s 2am for her… not so much a good time to call just to chat.  Plus, Okinawa phone systems are horrible.  None of the people on base have cell phones with plans to call the US because it’s a small fortune to do so.  So their cells work island-wide, but that’s it.  So even when the stars DO align and we are both able to talk at the same time (7am for me/9pm for her for example) her MagicJack will malfunction or something with her cell will go wrong and we’ll have to deal with constant disconnections or weird delays in the conversation.

And I had a baby.  That my big sister still has not met.  I really want to change that.  She is SO good with kids, she is just the best and most loving mom.  I want her to meet sweet Poppyseed so badly.

This is a pic of Sissy and me taken at my wedding.  Of course she was there with bells on – ready to do or be anywhere to help out and make me happy on my big weekend.

As you may have guessed, it is a huge challenge for her to come back and visit.  Tickets are about 1500-1800 dollars a pop… no small price for a family of 5.  I can’t expect her to shell out nearly 10k to come home and visit the fam.

Well, there is evidently something called space-a travel where a family can basically show up at an airport on base and just hope for empty seats on a flight to the States.  There’s never a guarantee that a seat will open, but if you DO get lucky then the flight is free.  The problem of course is that most people on base are all trying for those free flights (especially in the summer months when kids are out of school), so a lot of the time it’s a lost cause.  Families show up at the airport day after day for weeks and finally give up.  Or, sometimes families will get split up.  For example, Mom and kid #1 get on a flight with 2 extra seats and fly into a California military base, and Dad and kids #2 and #3 stand by and hope to catch anther flight but it could possibly take them to an entirely different base such as North Carolina.

Once you’re in the States, you are responsible for your own ticket to wherever you really want to go…. which in their case is Texas/Louisiana.

Well, my sister and her family are actually waiting to board a plane to California right now!  I am SOOOOOOOO excited and hopeful that they all 5 get on!  I know it’s not a guarantee, but I am literally so excited I could cry right now.

Please keep your fingers crossed that they get on that flight!  As of right now, it’s looking very promising!  Poppyseed and I have been shaking with excitement all evening!
