Liebster Award

I happened to check a blog that I enjoy reading the other day, and I saw that my blog had been nominated for the Leibster Award!   Chelsea is the author of the blog that nominated me, and I really like her blog.  We both had babies in the past year and so she tends to cross all these new mom bridges just before I do.  It really seems like I will read her blog post and then 3-4 months later I find that I am experiencing the same things that she was!

Anyway, it seems that this is a way to spread awareness about blogs such as mine that have roughly 4.7 average daily readers in order to get each other more traffic.

I’ll take it!

First I’m supposed to give 11 facts about myself.  Rather than list out 11 long things I’ll just type something really quick and put little to no thought in it.

[eleven FAST facts.]

1. I am 28.  2. I am sitting in a bathtub right now.  Garden tub if you were wondering.  You probably weren’t.  3. I wear a size 10 shoe, sometimes 10.5.  Try not to be jealous.   4. We cook, like, every stinkin’ meal we eat for the most part because we are paleo.  I’d say about 19 of the 21 weekly meals come from our own kitchen.  I take pictures of about 90% of them but do nothing with those photos.

Pasteured pork roast with steamed broccoli and carrots.

Grassfed beef pot roast with sweet potatoes and mushroom in a bone broth.

Packed work lunch – Paleo Chicken Salad on a bed of spinach

5. I still get Starbucks every day because there is crack in there and I can’t quit.  6.  I have a baby (6 months, girl) who is pretty much the center of my world other than my husband. 7. Pregnancy was fun. 8. Natural birth wasn’t so fun. 9. No one told me all your hair fell out after you had a baby, but mine sure did. 10. My husband calls me the Chocolate Monster.  I have no idea why.  11. Today I was looking at my hair in the rearview mirror of my car because ever since I lost 20% of my hair post-childbirth it has been growing back and it’s sticking up all over the place.  I looked at it really closely and found 4 gray hairs.  I felt like I had an important decision to make, cry or shout a curse word.  I chose the second option.

So the next part of the Liebster Award means that I should answer the questions that Chelsea put together for me.  Here goes.

1. What is something you’ve always wanted to do but never have? Why not?

I’ve always wanted to learn to play the guitar.  I haven’t yet because when I actually signed up for lessons and drove to some old dude’s house twice a week for a month, he was much more interested in rocking out while I watched than he was in teaching me anything.  This will be one of those things I push on my kids to do so that I can live vicariously through them.

2. Fill in the blanks. People sometimes think I’m ___ but really, I’m ___.

People sometimes think I’m bossy, but really, I’m just knowledgeable. Ha.

3. What are your favorite kinds of gifts to receive?

Gifts of flexibility.  (Gift card, spa day where I get to choose hot stone vs. Swedish, etc.)

Handmade gifts.  (The leather belt that Oatmeal made for me, the paintings that Anna made for Baby Poppyseed.)

Handmade gifts are the best.

4. What is something someone has done for you that really touched you?

Gosh there are lots of things.  When Anna and Johanna threw me a baby shower.  Anytime another mom tells me “You’re doing great!” instead of giving me advice or criticism.  The time that Starbucks employee gave me an extra shot free of charge because it was obvious I’d been ninja kicked by my 6 week old the night before.

5. What are three things you really like about yourself?

1.  I like that I’m pretty blunt.  Most people may not believe that this is a desirable quality, but to me blunt = honest and honesty is good.  Sure, it’s gotten me into trouble before, but it takes guts to be the only one in the group/boardroom/emailchain that can raise her hand and say “That’s dumb and I’m not doing it.”

2. My eyes.  They are probably the only physical thing about my entire body that I wouldn’t tweak if given the chance.  Okay okay, not entirely true, I’d give myself really long lashes.

3.  I’ve spent entirely too much time trying to think of number three and I just can’t.  I give up.

6. If you have kids, what are three attributes you hope to instill in them?

(I have a 6 month old daugher.)

1.  I hope to teach her and remind her constantly of The Golden Rule.  (Treat others as you’d like to be treated.)

2. I hope she has the work ethic of her father, but the appreciation of a good vacation that yours truly has.  🙂

3. I hope to teach her to be classy and ladylike.  I feel like there are a lot of young girls out there who don’t know how to chew with their mouths closed, set a place setting at a table, cross their legs when they are sitting, or write a proper thank you note that says more than “Thank you for the ___, it looks so lovely in our house.”  I’m not saying I have a track record of doing all of those things perfectly 100% of the time, but my mom drilled that stuff into our heads at a young age and I’m appreciative of it now.

7. What is something you struggle with?

I struggle at dealing with people who are picky eaters.  I sometimes meet people who say “I don’t like seafood… or spicy food… or coffee… or wine…”  Get out.  Seriously.  I don’t care if you were raised on certain foods or not.  A girl I once went to college with told me she didn’t like fried eggs because “We didn’t eat weird food for breakfast when we were kids.”

C’mon!  Fried eggs are not weird food… imagine if I’d made eggs benedict for that chick.  Oy!

So yes, I struggle with these people.  I don’t know how people don’t just open up their minds and try new things and appreciate a difference in flavors or textures or whatever.  Let’s put it this way, the people closest to me would all be thrilled to have some spicy tuna, a cup of joe, a big ole salad, or split a bottle of wine with me.

Capers? Don’t mind if I do!

8. What are you really good at?

Starting about 6 projects at once and going to bed with only 1 or 2 of them completed, with the other 4 of them already completely abandoned/forgotten.

9. What do you wish you could be better at?

10. Tell a funny joke.

A new mom gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says: ”Ugh, that’s the ugliest baby I’ve ever seen!”  The mom walks to the rear of the bus and sits down, clearly pissed. She says to a man next to her: ”The driver just insulted me!”  The man says: ”You go up there and tell him off. Go on, I’ll hold your monkey for you.”

11. How many hours do you sleep per night, on average?

Oh dear.  That’s a toughie.  On a good night I nurse my kid at 10pm and get in bed myself at about 10:15pm, she sleeps through the night and wakes me up at 6am.  On a not so good night I stay up doing chores/blogging until midnight and she wakes up at 3am or 5am.  My guess is that I average around 6 hours a night.  Wow, thanks a lot Liebster Award, I just realized I haven’t slept more than 7.5 hours at one time in 6 months!

Whew!  That took a while.

Lastly, I’m supposed to put the blogs that I’d like to nominate for the same Leibster Award.  I’m supposed to do 11 of them, I can’t re-nominate someone who hasn’t been nominated already, and they can’t be already famous blogs.  So…. I don’t know 11 small fry blogs like myself, but I’ll do my best.

1. Big Mama Taylor

2. Muscles Meat & Musings

3. Burpees, Broccoli and Baby

4.  The Sweetest Sin

5. Dinner and Vinyl

6. Cast Iron Coalition

Here are the 11 questions you are to answer.

1. If you could relive one year of your life on repeat forever, what year would it be and why?

2. Discuss your relationship with chocolate.

3. Have you ever witnessed or given birth, and if so, what are your memories of such?

4. What is the first thing you can ever remember cooking without the help of your parents?

5. Fill in the blank:  Sometimes _____ makes me really angry, but I deal with it by doing _____.

6. Are you a spender or a saver?

7. If you were walking down an empty street and you came across an adorable little puppy, would you take it home?  Why or why not?

8. What is one thing that you admire the most in your spouse/significant other?

9. Are you musical?

10. You get 10 seconds to decide where to live out the rest of your days and it CANNOT be in the United States.  Which places flashed through your mind in those 10 seconds?

11. When was the last time you relieved yourself in a non-indoor restroom, and what were the circumstances?

If even one of the above blogs does this, I’ll be pretty excited to see their response!
