Fall in a Nutshell

It’s always slightly intimidating to return to my blog after a few months away.  I am just going to jump in with an overall family update and our family pictures.

This time of year is just the BEST down here in Texas.  I’m cuddled up in my fluffy Pottery Barn rope (the one that Oatmeal would probably love for me to retire) with the fire warming the living room and a chai tea candle lit.  I’ve got some salsa on my left and a bag of organic chips on my right.  It’s the good life, I tell ya.

This year is going to be the first year that one of my kiddos understands what the holidays are all about!  Poppyseed is 3.5 and simply elated that Christmas is coming.  “MOMMY!” she will scream at an intersection.  “There is a CHWISTMAS TWEE OVER THERE!”  She’ll be pointing to a random tree in the middle of a shopping center, or perhaps the huge wreath hanging over the entrance at HEB.

“What do you want to get Daddy for Christmas?”  I’ll ask her.

“A PWESENT!” she tells me.

“What kind of present?” I ask.

“A CHWISTMAS present!”

Duh.

Today while the kids were taking their naps I ventured into our attic.  I don’t have as many Christmas decorations as I wish I did, but I pulled out some of the nativity figurines and put them on our mantle.  I also found a small fake tree (pre-lit for the win) and plugged it in right next to the front door.  You had better believe that Poppyseed noticed as soon as she woke up.  She had me lift her up and show her all of the nativity people (do I say people?) such as Baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the 3 kings, shepherds, and angel.  She knew who each person was immediately.  We will talk about Santa eventually, since I love that good old fashioned tradition, but right now we are just talking all about how Christmas is a time of giving as well as Jesus’ birthday.  She asked if we would have a cake for his birthday party on Christmas day, which threw me for a loop!

Needless to say we WILL be having a cake on Christmas day now.  I love love love a new tradition.

Middle baby is 15 months old, so he is obviously going to be more interested in, well, who the heck really knows?  Currently his mission in life is to explore, touch, pull, and climb just about anything.  The irony is that he’s the only one I have bought any Christmas gifts for.  We just have zero boy toys!  I’ve picked up a few wooden Melissa & Doug horse and toolbox type of things and even found a cool Green Toys dump truck and boat at a garage sale today.  (In mint condition, I may add!)  I don’t really have any idea what else to get for him, but I’m thinking I’ll get Poppyseed a doll house and just let the box it arrives in keep him entertained for as long as I can.

A few weekends ago, Oatmeal and I loaded up the kiddos and drove to our old stomping ground, College Station.  My friend Arlina is the BEST and sweetest photographer.  She got the best pictures of my family, despite the obvious challenge of getting two small kids to look at the camera with, um, reasonable (?) facial expressions.  Here are a few of my favorites…

I mean, this is real life.  These kid are best friends, and it’s the best feeling in the world to watch unfold before my eyes.

Hashtag I’m about to cry over here.  Hashtag cheesy.

Now that is an image that describes Middle at this stage of his life.

KissI really love that man.  I love his 5 o’clock shadow in this picture.  And his sideburns.  And the way he was actually sweating completely through that shirt I made him wear (wool in 90 degrees) but he didn’t complain.  And isn’t it realistic that we are kissing in the woods?  I can’t wait to hear what our kids say one day when they are in their 20s… “Hahahaha Mom, what is with all the pictures in the 2010s of families posing in the woods or in front of old cars or dilapidated buildings?”  I know it will happen.

Anyway, this will have to suffice for my short and sweet return to the world of Lola, Oatmeal, Poppyseed, and Middle.  🙂  It’s a good life…. good, good life.
